5 Things Every College Graduate Needs to Know Before Their First Paycheck

You got the diploma. You got the job. Now what? Tracy breaks down the financial lessons most graduates never learn in college: the paycheck, the 401(k) match, the HSA, the emergency fund, and the investing habit that quietly compounds into real money over decades. Practical, plain English, one smart decision at a time.

What we covered

5 takeaways from the conversation.

  1. 01

Read your paycheck. Understand what your W-4 is doing and why your take-home is what it is. Overpaying gives the IRS an interest-free loan; underpaying creates a surprise April bill. Neither is good.

  2. 02

Take the 401(k) match. Every time. If your employer matches, that is free money and skipping it is the single most expensive mistake a new grad can make. Contribute at least enough to get the full match, always.

  3. 03

Early in your career your income is the lowest it will ever be, which usually makes the Roth 401(k) math win. Pay the tax on the seed, not on the harvest. Traditional makes more sense later when you are in a higher bracket.

  4. 04

If your employer offers an HSA, open it. It is the only account in the tax code with a triple tax advantage: deductible going in, growth is tax-free, withdrawals for qualified medical are tax-free. Better than a Roth in the right circumstances.

  5. 05

Set up the emergency fund and pay attention to your credit before you need either. Three to six months of expenses in a high-yield savings account. Check your credit report annually. These two boring habits protect everything else you are trying to build.
