5 Things You Need to Know About Roth IRAs (Before You Open One)

Everyone talks about Roth IRAs like they are magic, but few people explain what they actually are, who they are best for, and when they make sense. Tracy breaks down the Roth in plain English: how it works, the 2026 limits, how it differs from a Traditional IRA and Roth 401(k), and where the backdoor Roth fits (and where it does not).

What we covered

5 takeaways from the conversation.

  1. 01

Understand what a Roth actually is. You are paying tax NOW on money you contribute so it can grow tax-free forever and come out tax-free in retirement. That is the whole trick. The trade-off is you cannot deduct today the way you can with a Traditional IRA.

  2. 02

There are income limits, and you need earned income to contribute at all. In 2026, if you make above the phaseout, you cannot contribute directly to a Roth IRA. The annual cap is the annual cap regardless of what you have in the bank.

  3. 03

A Roth IRA is not the same as a Roth 401(k). The 401(k) version has no income limit, which is why higher earners often stack Roth contributions through the workplace plan even when they cannot fund the IRA directly.

  4. 04

The backdoor Roth is a real strategy, not a casual DIY move. There are pro-rata rules, timing considerations, and tax forms involved. If you are thinking about it, work with a tax professional. Getting it wrong creates a tax bill instead of a benefit.

  5. 05

Roths are especially powerful in three situations: when you are young and in a low tax bracket, when your income is uneven (career pauses, sabbaticals, freelance years), and when you want tax diversification in retirement so you have levers to pull instead of being stuck with only pretax dollars.
